NewVue Communities & Luxury Cuts

Carlos Rosado opened Luxury Cuts in 2010 with an idea to reconfigure the barber shop business model. Instead of renting chairs to barbers as independent contractors, Carlos operates his two shops in Leominster and Fitchburg as a more traditional business, with employees earning a percentage of their sales. He also stocks lines of hair products, common practice in beauty salons, but less so in barber shops.

Challenge

Traditional barber shops cater to their regular customers, but for Luxury Cuts to grow and expand, it must attract new, walk-in customers. Carlos also needed technical assistance to obtain financing to expand his business and to open a third barbershop.

Solution

NewVue Communities, a Fitchburg-based community development corporation, worked with Luxury Cuts to build a website to quickly display the barbers’ hours, locations and skills in web searches. NewVue staff also assisted Carlos with a loan application for a third, high-visibility, easy-parking location - features important to attracting walk-in customers.

Impact

Carlos anticipates opening the third shop in the near future and growing his workforce from the current eight to 12 barbers.
